Mother Teresa has said, “The hunger for love is harder to satisfy than the hunger for bread.”
I encourage you to take some time to really think about that statement, especially this Christmas season. Most of the talk and action during this season is focused on satisfying the physical needs of people. But the very essence of Christmas goes much farther than just helping people’s physical needs and doing some good works. Jesus came to meet the world’s primary need – the hunger for love!! During Jesus’ earthly life he modeled a lifestyle of love that is unparalleled among any other person in history. He loved the whole person. He healed the physical body, he cut right to the heart and he offered life to the inner most part of the human soul. And Jesus did not just minister to large crowds, but mainly ministered to individuals. He did not allow his inner circle of disciples to be a barrier from the people. He welcomed the little children into his lap. He elevated women more than any leader. He engaged and hung out with the outcasts. He loved because God is love. When a person does not feel loved, truly loved they cannot blossom into the beautiful being that they were created to be. We were all created in the image of God. We were all created to be beautiful because God is fully beautiful. The desire to be beautiful is ultimately the desire to be loved. This is what is behind our image-driven fashion culture. No mere human can satisfy this universal hunger for love. The beauty of the Christmas story is the revelation of the love of God through Jesus Christ. I have been listening to Gungor’s song, Beautiful Things. I highly recommend you download this song. Here are a couple lines from the song:
All this pain I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change at all
All this earth, could all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us
All around, hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos life is being found in You
