God’s Bucket List

Do you have a Bucket List? A Bucket List is basically a list of things we hope to do or experience before we die. The idea was popularized in a 2007 movie titled, “The Bucket List.” The term possibly was derived from an English idiom, “to kick the bucket.” It is slang for “to die” and believed to come from a method of execution such as hanging.

So, what is on your Bucket List? If you don’t have a Bucket List take some time and think about what you would like to do before you die. A much more important question is why are those things on your Bucket List? This will take more time to process.

What about God’s Bucket List? First, God has no beginning and no end, so He can never die. However, He has revealed to us some of His glorious plans for human history and into eternity. He has shown that He desires a family, a real family that is in real relationship with Him that He can lavish His eternal blessings upon and call into His greater purposes. Romans 8:32 gives just a glimpse of His goodness and what He has already done for us and what He plans for us.

“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”

Today, we desperately need a fresh awakening to seek God’s Bucket List for our life rather than our Bucket List. When a people focus on their Bucket List rather than God’s they lose the plot of life and fulfillment. Worse yet, over time it brings many destructive elements. I am reminded of the book of Judges, which immediately follows the book of Joshua. The Israelites had entering the promise land with a hopeful bright future, but quickly within one generation they lost the plot of life and blessing – they lost God’s Bucket List for them. Judges 2:10 states,

“And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.”

And Judges 21:25 states, “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

In many ways we as a Church and as a nation are experiencing these verses today. More than one generation has arisen in America that has lost the plot and doing what is right in their own eyes.

What are we to do? We start with ourselves. What is God’s Bucket List for us? There is nothing wrong with having certain adventures and goals and things on our list. The question we need to ponder is; have we taken it to God so it can be infused with eternal purpose and blessing?
