Unity is required for growing healthy relationships. Unity flows from the very essence of God. The only way we can make sense of the universal desire for unity and the only way we ultimately can attain unity is by having a unified relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God exists in perfect unity; three persons one God. A single god knows nothing about unity, community or love for they would be dependent on their creation to be able to experience those things. Unity flows from the character of God and we were created in His image to be in unity with Him.
So, why is experiencing unity and maintaining it so difficult today? It is Satan’s tactic to keep disunity in our relationship with the Godhead, for if he can accomplish this he can accomplish disunity in all of our relationships. The primary thing that Satan tempted Jesus with in the desert was for Him “to act alone” separate from relationship with the Father and the Spirit. And this is Satan’s daily strategy with us; “to get us to act alone.” For when we act alone we break unity with the Trinity and when we are out of unity with the Trinity we cannot be in unity with any other person. Jesus said that He did not do anything He did not see His Father doing and He tells us that we can do nothing without Him. Unity is required for growing healthy relationships.
If we are not growing relationally with each Person of the Trinity we are not growing in unity with God. We need to realize that our relationship with God is both individual with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and it is communal – He is One God. Are you growing in relationship with each Person of the Trinity? If not, you will not be able to grow deeper in relationship with others. Take some time to think through these questions:
Are you experiencing the forgiveness and grace of Jesus in greater measure?
Are you experiencing the love and affirmation of the Father in greater measure?
Are you experiencing the fellowship and power of the Holy Spirit in greater measure?
“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.” -Mark 4:24
